In early 2019, USA Climbing, the national governing body of the sport of competition climbing in the United States, approached Story Firm with a unique event video production problem. USA Climbing was hosting the 2019 Youth National Bouldering Championships in Bend, Oregon in a just a few weeks and they needed to find a video production company that could livestream 30 separate competition events during the their 3-day event. As Story Firm has been livestreaming rock climbing competitions since Portland Boulder Rally 2015, we were thrilled to be offered the opportunity to collaborate with the biggest competition climbing organization in North America.

The 2019 Youth National Bouldering Championships were held at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond, Oregon — a 40,000 square foot facility. The competition format had 4 divisions that would compete and need to be livestreamed simultaneously.

In order to provide a smooth livestreaming experience, Director George Mihaly scouted the Expo Center the week prior to the competition. During the scouting trip George created a site map to ensure for ideal camera angles, electrical routing, and internet connectivity.

With a production team including a producer, director, technical director, and cinematographers, Story Firm successfully livestreamed 31 total events (including an awards ceremony) to over 100,000 viewers for USA Climbing’s YouTube Channel. A highlights video was also created from the event that received several thousand more views and impressions across Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
